Roof ridge
The ridge is the horizontal line at the top of a roof where two sloping sides meet. It is usually covered with ridge cap shingles or metal, and it often carries a vent along its length.
Flashing
Flashing is thin metal installed where a roof meets something else, such as a chimney, a wall, a skylight or a valley. It directs water away from the joints where leaks tend to start.
Soffit and fascia
The fascia is the board along the roof edge that the gutters attach to. The soffit is the underside of the roof overhang. Together they finish the roofline and cover the structure behind them.
Underlayment
Underlayment is a protective layer installed on the roof deck beneath the shingles or metal panels. It adds a second barrier against water that gets past the outer roofing.
Ventilation
Roof ventilation lets air move through the attic, with intake vents low on the roof and exhaust vents near the top. Moving air helps limit trapped heat and moisture in the attic space.
Gutters
Gutters collect rain from the roof edge and carry it through downspouts away from the house. That helps keep water from pooling near the foundation and walls.
